The Minister for Education, Macsuzy Mondon, has said during the last 15 years the country has worked a lot to improve the level of literacy which has resulted in a better future for many of our adults.

The minister was speaking during the Literacy Certificate Presentation Ceremony hosted last week by the Seychelles Institute of Distance & Open Learning (SIDOL). The award ceremony is an annual event to commemorate the International Literacy Day which falls on September 8.

This year’s theme was celebrated under the theme ‘Reading The Past - Writing The Future’.

Also present at the ceremony were the Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development Idith Alexander and other dignitaries.

The institute also launched its revamped website where prospective participants can log on for further information on SIDOL.

“During the last 15 years the country has worked a lot to improve the level of literacy which has brought about a better future for many of our adults.

“Our next step is to put more emphasis on the quality of education we offer our adults so as to allow all, both young and adults, the opportunity to continue their education to any level they would like to reach,” said Minister Mondon in her remarks for the occasion.

It is for this reason, she added, that the quality of basic education offered to adults will be reinforced where emphasis is placed on competence.

In her remarks for the occasion, Marie Claire Henriette said the home grown literacy initiative which started as a nationwide campaign has also come of age and is now 38 years.

“Looking back we have every reason to celebrate our achievements because over the years the national programme has contributed to increase the literacy rate which today stands at 96%,” said Mrs Henriette.

This year’s participants followed courses at Level 1, 2 and 3 in Creole, English, French and Mathematics. Best performers in each category were also awarded certificates and tokens of appreciation.
